The Basic 12-lead EKG class is for the Healthcare Professional that knows how to interpret EKG rhythms on a single lead view and wants to get introduced to the basic assessment capabilities the 12-lead EKG provides.
This course will provide a review of cardiac anatomy and physiology, the importance of proper lead placement, and how to recognize probable improper lead placement on a 12-lead strip. The course will cover axis deviations, atrial and ventricular enlargements, bundle branch blocks, and recognition of coronary artery occlusions that qualify as a STEMI.
For this class students may find Appendix C and Appendix D of Basic Arrhythmias, 8th edition by Gail Walraven to be helpful, though almost any basic 12-lead interpretation manual should be helpful.
Some electrolyte imbalances (such as Hyper and Hypokalemia), as well as touching on some advanced 12-lead tips (Smith-modified Scarbosa criteria, A-fib with WPW, Brugada Sundrome, etc.) may be discussed if time permits.
